Last Sunset reviews and quotes
“"Last Sunset" is a multi-layered album that will satisfy both guitar rock fans and fans of more sophisticated, jazz or oriental sounds. Nicolas Meier proves that he still has many fresh ideas up his sleeve, and his music remains consistently fascinating and full of emotions. This album is not only a memory of time spent with Jeff Beck, but above all proof that Meier's creativity and imagination know no bounds.!”

"Nicolas Meier, delighted with the cooperation with Bill Bruford, Jeff Beck and Steve Vai, has built himself an impeccable position as one of the most versatile, ambitious and masterful guitarists. Now with the album "Last Sunset" he confirms not only the talent of an instrumentalist, but also an interesting and sensitive composer."

Bosphorus is a beautiful guitar ballad making me think of Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Jeff Beck, of course.... Meier's soaring guitar solo here gives me goosebumps all over, making this my favourite track of Last Sunset for sure! The Eye Of Horus, the concluding piece of this album is a dark rocker, again more in the veins of Joe "Satch" Satriani; ending this album in style indeed. Last Sunset is an amazing album that will appeal to fans/lovers of instrumental guitar music, as Nicolas Meier is definitely one of today's most ambitious and skilful guitar talents on this planet. Check it out and play it LOUD; listening tip: Plan 9.

"A delightful album that should appeal to fans of instrumental guitar dominated productions, whether they are described as progressive or not.
"‘Rose on Water’ serves as an interlude to the release. And that immediately diverges with the symphonic rocker "Plan 9," the jazzy "Legend" and "Strange Sensations," and "Blasts from the Past," tracks that offer a breath of fresh air with a few rock tunes. The slow songs "Bosphorus," "Riversides," and "Yemin" drift somewhat in the same direction. With the worldly "The Eye of Horus," the circle is, for now, complete."

Meier's energy erupts over the bubbling rhythms, with additional guitar support from Dewa Budjana and Krissy Ivlatthews on three tracks. The result is a highly intense jazz-rock set.

Few guitarists have been as up close and personal with Jeff Beck as Nicolas Meier. Herr Meier was wingman to Beck on two world tours and LAST SUNSET is his tribute to the unique axe man. All the songs were written during those 2013-2015 tours. Not surprisingly Meier’s got on the phone to those long allied with beck, notably Colaiuta, Haslip and Ball – and their tight musical relationship is immediately evident.
Meier is rightly respected for his capacity to meld Mediterranean and near east, notably Turkish, themes and rhythms. Here though he’s firmly in rock and fusion territory, with a decidedly metal edge, notably on cuts like ‘Plan 9’ and ‘Blasts from the Past’, the latter featuring Matthews and his spectacularly shredding.
There are flashes of Meier’s more ‘world music’ dies, which jazzers may prefer. ‘Bosphorus’ has one of those sparkling Turkish style themes, as you may guesss from the title, but soon morphs into a Beck-ish ballad. ‘Yemin’, with its violin and acoustic guitars likewise is closer to the subtleties Meier is so sensitive to. But again, grandiosity kicks in which flattens our expectations. As with all Meier releases, LAST SUNSET is big-hearted and technically adroit, but it’s more one for Beck buffs then jazz fans.
